JOHALLA PROJECTS PRESENTS "GEOMETRIC VILLAGE" ART INSTALLATION AT PITCHFORK MUSIC FESTIVAL
PITCHFORK MUSIC FESTIVAL
UNION PARK—CHICAGO, IL
(CHICAGO — JULY 18–20, 2014) Johalla Projects, with support from the Thompson Hotel Chicago, will present large-scale public art installations by Chicago-based artists Heather Gabel and Chad Kouri at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival. Together, Gabel and Kouri will create a “Geometric Village” on the south side of the festival, located adjacent to the Blue Stage.
The artists, who primarily work in two-dimensional collage, will translate their vastly disparate visual aesthetics into highly stylized, three-dimensional house-like structures that festival attendees will be able to walk through and around. Consequently, with support from Chicago’s Tan & Loose Press, this “Village” — which will also feature art works on the structures’ interiors — will provide an opportunity for Pitchfork attendees to immerse themselves in an atmosphere which will vastly differ from the typical music festival backdrop.
“Geometric Village” is curated by Johalla Projects, a Chicago-based gallery and art collective which works to organize, curate, and produce large-scale public art projects across the United States.
About Johalla Projects
Johalla Projects was established in 2009 by Anna Cerniglia as a venue for emerging and mid-career artists. Located in Chicago's West Town neighborhood, Johalla Projects is a collective space collaborating with artists, writers, and curators. In addition to presenting exhibitions in its gallery space, Johalla works to organize and execute public art projects in neighborhoods across the city of Chicago and nationwide. Every exhibition and project undergoes a thoughtful selection process, assuring that each show presented by Johalla Projects is comprised of the finest contemporary work.
About Heather Gabel
Heather Gabel (b. 1977) has attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Columbia College Chicago. She works in many mediums, with an emphasis on collage. Current and recent projects include a series of neon-based works addressing present/future death rituals in modern American society, a public art mural in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood, and a trilogy of video works that will be paired with original scores by local electronic musicians.
About Chad Kouri
As a semi-nomadic, mostly Chicago-based artist working between disciplines, Kouri has become extremely interested in various cities and their respective creative communities and art ecologies. With equal interests in conceptual and minimalist art, ethnography, typography, design, jazz and the gray areas between these fields, his body of work is more a collection of various ongoing projects, thoughts and experiments tied together by a strong sense of composition, concise documentation and an overall vibe of optimism than a seamless display of a "style" or "genre". Kouri believes that inspiration can be found anywhere and that relentless optimism is the only true rule. He is best known as a co-founder of the Chicago-based art and design incubator, The Post Family, his past role as Art Director of Proximity Magazine and recognition as one of Chicago's up-and-coming image makers in NewCity's 2010 Breakout Artists of the year issue.
