Material Flex

August 12, 2016 – September 4, 2016

Johalla Projects is very pleased to present MATERIAL FLEX, a new group exhibition featuring works by Shannon Crider, Kevin Goodrich, Daniel Hojnacki, Jeroen Nelemans, and Julie Weber. The exhibition will be on view from August 12 through September 4, 2016. An opening reception will be held with the artists on Friday, August 12 from 7-10pm.

MATERIAL FLEX brings works by five artists together in a presentation that considers ideas about pure representation of material. Collectively, the artists and the featured works weave through traditional methods of making -- straight photography and chromogenic printing, ink-based screenprinting, oil painting on canvas -- with a distinctly more self-aware approach, choosing to either acknowledge, depart from, or completely dismantle these straightforward modes of output.

Each medium/process represented in the exhibition -- ranging here from inkjet-printed fabric, light bulbs, wall spackle, photographic emulsion, and copy toner -- is employed solely for the artists’ own conceptual purposes. Consequently, the works become self-informing and the medium provides additional, strategic context for the viewer and for other artworks that are in proximity. In this sense, MATERIAL FLEX is an exercise in subtle formal subversion and considered deconstruction.
